As an example of Nampak’s proactive approach to the environment, the company is pleased to be a member of the consortium elected by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP www.wrap.org.uk), to research their ‘Development of the food grade HDPE recycling process’ project.
The major aim of the project was to develop a cost-efficient recycling process to produce food-grade HDPE from post-consumer recycling for new milk bottles. This has been achieved through the world’s first recycled content milk bottle on sale in Marks & Spencer’s organic milk bottle range with 10% recycled HDPE content.
Active members of the consortium dedicated to a whole scale launch of rHDPE now include:
• Delleve Plastics UK (source of baled bottles from several UK suppliers) • RTT Systemtechnik, Germany (sorting of bottles) • Sorema/Previero, Italy (washing and sorting bottles) • EREMA Austria (super-clean recycling). • RAPRA UK (super-clean recycling, polymer charicterisation). • Dairy Crest Limited (filling and product shelf life testing). • Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV, Germany (analytical screening of post consumer HDPE, determination of process cleaning efficiency, challenge testing and compliance testing and evaluation).
