Reinforcing its leadership role in the introduction of bottle-to-bottle recycling, Nampak Plastics has received a ‘high commendation’ from the judges at the Business Commitment to the Environment (BCE) Environmental Leadership Awards 2010 held in London on 8th June 2010.

Competing in the ‘Product Premier Award’ category, the company received the award in recognition of its leadership in driving the major breakthrough in sustainable milk packaging through the manufacture of the world’s first recycled-content plastic milk bottle.

The award was collected by Eric Collins, Managing Director, Nampak Plastics, who
commented: “Developing the world’s first post-consumer recycled content plastic milk bottle was a significant achievement for Nampak Plastics and its partners; and we are delighted to receive this prestigious award in recognition. Recycled content in plastic milk bottles currently stands at 10%, and targets have been set across the whole dairy industry through the Milk Roadmap to increase this to 50% by 2020 as a direct result of the sustainable milk packaging drive led by Nampak and Dairy UK.”

Congratulating the winners, the BCE president, Sir Anthony Cleaver said: “Despite the continuing economic challenges, standards in this year’s competition have been higher than ever. All the winners are innovative and forward thinking, driven by a high regard for corporate social responsibility, and they set the benchmark for other businesses.”

By receiving this recognition Nampak, along with other large multinational PLCs and SME’s, has demonstrated how environmental leadership can produce substantial benefits irrespective of business size.

The Business Commitment to the Environment (BCE) Environmental Leadership Awards represents all that is innovative and cutting edge in environmental sustainability in the context of modern business practices. They are awarded only to those businesses that can actually demonstrate that they are making a real difference to their impact on the environment without affecting their ability to make a profit and develop the business for the future.
